1. Resume Structuring for AI Infrastructure Roles
Your resume is not a list of things you did. It is a marketing document whose only job is to get you an interview. Every word on it should serve that purpose. AI infrastructure roles — DevOps, MLOps, Platform Engineering, SRE — have specific expectations, and your resume needs to be structured to match those expectations immediately, because the person reading it is spending 15-30 seconds on first pass.
Let’s start with the structure itself before getting into content.
Header — your name, location (city and country is enough, no full address), email, LinkedIn URL, and GitHub URL. For AI infrastructure roles, your GitHub link is not optional. It is expected. If you don’t have one, that’s a gap we’ll address later. Phone number is fine to include but rarely used at the early screening stage.
Professional summary — two to four sentences at the top that immediately tell the reader who you are and what you bring. This is not an objective statement (“I am looking for a challenging role…”) — nobody cares what you’re looking for at this stage. It’s a positioning statement. “DevOps engineer with 4 years of experience building and operating Kubernetes-based ML infrastructure on AWS, specializing in CI/CD pipeline automation, GitOps workflows with ArgoCD, and MLOps tooling including MLflow and Kubeflow.” The reader now knows exactly where you fit before reading anything else. Every word in the summary should be a keyword that matches the job description.
Skills section — place this high, either right after the summary or in a sidebar. Recruiters and ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) scan for keywords. For AI infrastructure roles, organize this by category rather than dumping everything in one block. Categories might be: Cloud Platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), Container & Orchestration (Kubernetes, Docker, Helm), CI/CD (GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, Jenkins, Tekton), MLOps Tools (MLflow, Kubeflow, Seldon, BentoML), Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, Pulumi, Ansible), Monitoring (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog), Programming (Python, Bash, Go). This structured format is faster to scan and shows you think in systems.
Experience section — this is the bulk of your resume and where most people go wrong. Bullet points that describe tasks (“Managed Kubernetes clusters,” “Wrote CI/CD pipelines”) are weak. Bullet points that describe impact are strong. We’ll cover this in detail in the impact-based descriptions section, but the structure for each role should be: company name, your title, dates, then 4-6 bullet points per role that each follow the pattern of action + technology + outcome.
Projects section — for AI infrastructure roles, this is critically important, possibly more important than some work experience entries. If your job title was generic (Software Engineer) but you built ML infrastructure on the side or at work, projects let you highlight that specifically. Each project should have a name, a one-line description, the tech stack, and 2-3 impact bullets. Link to GitHub wherever possible.
Education — relevant degrees and certifications. For infrastructure roles, certifications carry significant weight: CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), AWS Solutions Architect, Google Professional ML Engineer, HashiCorp Vault Associate. List these prominently. If you have relevant certifications and a non-CS degree, put certifications in the skills section or right after education.
Format — single page if you have under 8 years of experience, two pages maximum after that. ATS-friendly means no tables, no text boxes, no graphics, no columns for the main content — these break parsing. Use a clean single-column or minimal two-column layout. PDF format always. Standard fonts. Readable font size — 10-11pt for body, 12-14pt for headers.
2. Highlighting DevOps + MLOps Experience
DevOps and MLOps are related but distinct, and the intersection is where the most valuable and least common profiles live. If you have experience in both, you need to present that combination deliberately because most candidates come from one side or the other, not both. That intersection is your competitive advantage — highlight it explicitly.
The problem many engineers face: their day job was pure DevOps — Kubernetes, CI/CD, infrastructure — but they worked adjacent to ML teams and picked up MLOps context. Or their job title was Data Engineer or ML Engineer but they did a lot of the infrastructure work. Either way, you need to pull the relevant experience forward and connect the dots for the reader, who won’t make assumptions in your favor.
Name your MLOps tools explicitly — don’t just say “built ML infrastructure.” Name the specific tools. “Deployed and maintained MLflow tracking server for experiment management and model registry, supporting 12 data scientists.” “Built Kubeflow pipelines for automated model training and deployment on GKE.” “Integrated Seldon Core for model serving with canary deployment support.” Specific tools signal genuine hands-on experience. Vague descriptions signal peripheral involvement.
Bridge the DevOps to MLOps connection explicitly — the most compelling framing shows how your DevOps skills were specifically applied to ML problems. “Extended existing GitOps deployment workflow (ArgoCD + Helm) to support ML model versioning and automated deployment upon registry promotion” tells a much richer story than listing both GitOps and MLOps separately. The bridge — your DevOps skills solving ML-specific problems — is the interesting part.
Show both sides of the coin — DevOps + MLOps means you understand both the infrastructure layer (Kubernetes, CI/CD, IaC) and the ML-specific layer (training pipelines, model serving, experiment tracking, drift monitoring). Your resume and LinkedIn should have explicit examples from both. If your experience is strong on one side and thin on the other, be honest about it but frame the thin side as adjacent knowledge you’re actively building.
MLOps-specific accomplishments that stand out: building the internal ML platform that data scientists actually use, reducing model deployment time from days to hours through automation, implementing model monitoring that caught drift before it affected production metrics, building the feature store that reduced feature engineering duplication across teams. These are infrastructure accomplishments with direct ML value, and they read very differently from generic DevOps work.
Distinguish MLOps from ML — a common mistake is conflating ML engineering (building models) with MLOps (building the infrastructure that trains, deploys, and monitors models). You don’t need to know how to build a neural network to be excellent at MLOps. You need to know how to build the systems that make building, training, deploying, and monitoring neural networks reliable and efficient. Be clear about which side you’re on — trying to claim ML modeling expertise you don’t have will fall apart immediately in technical interviews.
3. Positioning as Platform Engineer
Platform Engineering is a relatively new and increasingly important title in the industry. It sits at the intersection of DevOps, infrastructure engineering, and developer experience. A Platform Engineer’s job is to build the internal developer platform — the tools, workflows, and infrastructure abstractions that make other engineers (including data scientists and ML engineers) productive without them needing to become Kubernetes or cloud experts themselves.
This positioning is powerful for several reasons. Platform engineering roles are in high demand and short supply. They command strong compensation. They’re intellectually interesting — you’re building products for internal users, with real adoption metrics and real feedback loops. And if you have Kubernetes + CI/CD + automation experience, you’re closer to this positioning than you might realize.
Reframe your experience around developer experience — the key mental shift for positioning as a platform engineer is moving from “I manage infrastructure” to “I enable engineers to ship faster and more reliably.” The same Kubernetes work reads very differently: “Managed production Kubernetes cluster” versus “Built self-service Kubernetes deployment platform enabling 40 engineers to deploy independently without infrastructure team involvement.” The second framing is platform engineering. The first is ops work.
Internal Developer Platform (IDP) language — platform engineering has a specific vocabulary. Paved roads (opinionated, well-supported paths for common tasks), golden paths (the recommended way to do something, with tooling that makes it easy), self-service infrastructure (engineers provision what they need without tickets), developer portals (single place to discover services, documentation, deployment status). Using this vocabulary signals familiarity with the discipline.
Show empathy for developers — platform engineering is fundamentally a product discipline. Your users are developers and data scientists. If you’ve gathered feedback from users of internal tools, iterated on a developer portal, measured time-to-first-deployment for new teams, or reduced the number of support tickets through better tooling, these are platform engineering metrics that demonstrate you think about developer experience as a product, not just as a technical problem.
Backstage, Port, Cortex — these are Internal Developer Portal tools that are becoming standard in platform engineering organizations. If you’ve worked with any of them or built equivalent functionality, that’s highly relevant experience for platform engineering roles. If you haven’t, understanding what they do — service catalogs, self-service scaffolding, deployment tracking, dependency visualization — and being able to discuss them intelligently is important.
The CNCF platform engineering maturity model — the Cloud Native Computing Foundation has published frameworks for platform engineering maturity. Familiarizing yourself with this language and being able to describe where your previous organization was on the maturity spectrum, and what you built to advance it, is impressive in interviews.
4. Showcasing Architecture Projects
Architecture projects are the portfolio items that differentiate senior candidates from intermediate ones. Anyone can list tools on a resume. Fewer people can describe why they chose those tools over alternatives, what tradeoffs they made, what they would do differently, and how the system handles failure. Showcasing architecture well signals senior-level thinking.
An architecture project is not just a list of tools — “Built a Kubernetes-based ML platform using ArgoCD, MLflow, and Prometheus” describes what you used. An architecture showcase describes what problem you were solving, what constraints you were operating under, what you designed, why you made the key decisions you made, and what the outcome was. The decision-making and tradeoff reasoning is what makes it impressive.
For each architecture project, structure the narrative as:
The problem — what situation required a solution? What was painful before your intervention? Be specific. “Data scientists were manually deploying models by SSHing into production servers, with no versioning, no rollback capability, and no monitoring. Average time from trained model to production was 2 weeks.” This sets up why your work mattered.
The constraints — what were you working with? Existing infrastructure you had to integrate with. Team size. Time available. Budget constraints. Regulatory requirements. Constraints show that your design was grounded in reality, not a greenfield dream architecture.
The design decisions — what were the key choices you made and why? “We chose ArgoCD over Spinnaker because our team was already familiar with GitOps principles and we needed something the small team could operate, not a platform that itself required a dedicated ops team.” This reasoning demonstrates architectural maturity.
The outcome — what changed after you built this? Quantify wherever possible. Deployment time reduced from 2 weeks to 4 hours. Number of production incidents related to deployments reduced by 70%. Data scientist autonomy increased — they could deploy without infrastructure team involvement.
Diagram it — if you’re presenting architecture projects in a portfolio, a GitHub repo, or a presentation, include architecture diagrams. Clear, well-labeled diagrams showing the components, data flows, and integration points communicate more in 30 seconds than paragraphs of text. Tools like Excalidraw, draw.io, or Lucidchart produce clean diagrams. Mermaid diagrams in your README render directly in GitHub.
Discuss failure modes — what happens when components fail? How does your system handle the feature store going down? What’s the data loss scenario if the model registry is unavailable? Thinking through failure modes and designing for resilience is what separates architects from implementers. Bring this up proactively in your descriptions and interviews.
5. Writing Technical Project Summaries
A technical project summary is a short, dense paragraph or set of structured bullets that conveys a complete picture of a project — what it was, how you built it, and why it mattered — in 100-200 words. You need these for your resume, your LinkedIn, your GitHub repos, and your interview storytelling.
Most engineers write project descriptions that are either too vague (“Built ML infrastructure platform using Kubernetes”) or too detailed (“Configured Kubernetes namespace with ResourceQuotas, LimitRanges, PodDisruptionBudgets, horizontal pod autoscalers, and custom metrics adapters, integrating Prometheus stack with custom alerting rules, ArgoCD for GitOps deployment with ApplicationSets for multi-tenant model serving…”). Neither serves you well. The first gives the reader nothing to engage with. The second buries the reader in implementation details before they understand what the project was.
The structure that works:
Context sentence — what was the situation or problem? One sentence. “ML models at [Company] were deployed manually, with no versioning or monitoring, causing frequent production incidents and two-week deployment cycles.”
What you built — one to two sentences on the solution at the right level of abstraction. Not every technical detail, but enough to show the scope and the key technical choices. “Designed and implemented a GitOps-driven ML deployment platform on Kubernetes using ArgoCD for declarative deployments, MLflow for model registry and experiment tracking, and Seldon Core for scalable model serving with canary deployment support.”
Key technical decisions — one sentence on a significant choice you made. “Chose Seldon over custom Flask serving to get built-in A/B testing and monitoring without reinventing infrastructure already solved by the open-source community.”
Outcome — one to two sentences on measurable results. “Reduced model deployment cycle from 14 days to under 4 hours. Platform now serves 23 production models with automated rollback on performance degradation.”
Write at the right abstraction level — your summary should be comprehensible to a senior engineer reading your resume, detailed enough to signal technical depth, but not so detailed that it loses non-technical readers like recruiters who are screening for keyword matches. The way to calibrate: if someone with general software engineering knowledge could read your summary and understand what you built and why it mattered, you’re at the right level.
Write multiple versions — a one-paragraph version for your resume, a three-paragraph version for your GitHub repo README, and a five-minute verbal version for interviews. They all tell the same story at different levels of detail. Having all three prepared means you’re never caught off-guard by “tell me about this project” in any format.
6. Building a Strong GitHub Portfolio
For AI infrastructure roles, your GitHub profile is often more important than your resume. A resume tells hiring managers what you claim to have done. GitHub shows what you’ve actually built. The difference in credibility is enormous. Many hiring managers will check your GitHub before deciding whether to bring you in for an interview.
A strong GitHub portfolio for AI infrastructure has several characteristics.
Quantity matters less than quality — ten repositories with clear READMEs, working code, and documented purpose are far more valuable than a hundred repositories of abandoned experiments, half-finished tutorials, and forked repos you never touched. Audit your existing GitHub profile. Archive or delete repos that reflect poorly on you. Pin your six best repos to your profile.
Each repository should have an excellent README — the README is the product page for your project. If someone lands on your repo and the README is empty or just a title, they move on. A good README for an infrastructure project includes: what problem this solves and why it exists, architecture overview with a diagram, tech stack and why you chose it, how to get started (setup instructions that actually work), example outputs or screenshots, and what you would do next if you continued the project. Write the README as if you’re explaining the project to a smart engineer who has never heard of it.
Show AI infrastructure specifically — general DevOps repos are fine but not differentiating. What hiring managers for MLOps and platform engineering roles want to see is ML infrastructure work. Build and publish things like: a local MLflow + Kubernetes setup for model development, a Terraform module for ML infrastructure on AWS or GCP, a CI/CD pipeline template for ML model training and deployment, a monitoring stack configured for ML-specific metrics, a feature store implementation, a model serving setup with canary deployment support.
Demonstrate real problem-solving — the most impressive repos solve real problems you actually encountered, not tutorials you followed. “I kept forgetting to switch Kubernetes contexts before running commands and it caused problems, so I built a shell plugin that shows your current context clearly and requires confirmation before any write operation in production namespaces” is a real problem with a real solution. It shows you think like an engineer, not like a tutorial-follower.
Consistent commit history — a GitHub contribution graph that shows consistent activity over time is much more convincing than one that shows a burst of activity right before a job search. You don’t need to code every single day, but regular, consistent contributions signal genuine engagement with engineering as a craft, not just a job.
Stars and documentation signal professionalism — while you can’t control how many people star your repos, you can control documentation quality. Repos with thorough READMEs, proper license files, contributing guidelines for projects you want to look professional, and organized code structure signal that you write software meant to be maintained and used, not just written.
Write about your repos — link to your GitHub from your LinkedIn and resume. In your project descriptions on LinkedIn, link directly to specific repos. This creates a coherent story where your profile claims experience that your GitHub portfolio validates.
7. LinkedIn Optimization Strategy
LinkedIn for engineers feels uncomfortable because self-promotion feels uncomfortable. But LinkedIn is how most senior roles are filled — not through job postings but through recruiters searching for specific profiles or hiring managers looking for people their network can vouch for. An unoptimized LinkedIn profile is invisible to this process.
Your headline is prime real estate — the one line under your name is what shows up in search results, in connection requests, and in recruiter searches. Don’t waste it with just your job title. “Senior DevOps Engineer at XYZ Corp” tells a recruiter nothing differentiating. “Platform Engineer | Kubernetes | MLOps | Building ML Infrastructure at Scale | AWS GCP” is rich with searchable keywords and communicates your specialization immediately. LinkedIn search works on keywords, and your headline is the highest-weight field.
Your About section is your cover letter — write it in first person and lead with the one or two things that make your profile worth reading. What specifically do you do, at what scale, with what impact? Then describe your specializations, what you’re passionate about in your work, and what kinds of opportunities you’re interested in. Three to four paragraphs is right — enough to give context, not so much that people don’t read it. End with a call to action: what should someone do after reading your profile? “Open to discussing platform engineering and MLOps roles” is direct and helpful.
Experience section with impact bullets — same principle as your resume. Don’t describe duties, describe accomplishments. “Responsible for maintaining Kubernetes clusters” → “Operated 4 production Kubernetes clusters across AWS and GCP supporting 150 engineers, achieving 99.97% API availability over 18 months.” Numbers, scale, outcome.
Skills endorsements — add all your relevant skills explicitly. LinkedIn’s algorithm uses skills for matching with job postings and recruiter searches. You want every major tool and technology in your skillset listed. Ask colleagues to endorse your top skills — endorsements don’t carry huge weight with humans but do affect LinkedIn’s algorithmic ranking.
Featured section — this is underused by most engineers but incredibly valuable. The Featured section lets you pin content at the top of your profile. Pin your best GitHub project with a link and a screenshot. Pin a technical blog post you wrote. Pin a conference talk or presentation. This is your portfolio, right there on your LinkedIn profile where hiring managers can see it without having to find your GitHub separately.
Content and engagement — you don’t need to be a LinkedIn influencer, but sharing content occasionally dramatically increases your visibility. Writing a short post about a technical problem you solved and how you solved it, sharing an article about Kubernetes or MLOps with a brief comment on your experience with the topic, or even just commenting thoughtfully on others’ posts keeps you visible in your network’s feed. Over time, this builds a reputation in your area of specialization. When a recruiter searches for “MLOps engineer Hyderabad” and your profile comes up, your recent content about ML infrastructure reinforces your expertise.
Connections strategy — connect with people you actually know or have interacted with, and with professionals in your specific space — other platform engineers, ML infrastructure engineers, DevOps practitioners at companies you’re interested in. Recruiters at companies you’re targeting are absolutely worth connecting with. A second-degree connection to the hiring manager at a company you’re applying to is a significant advantage.
8. Preparing Impact-Based Project Descriptions
This is possibly the highest-leverage change most engineers can make to their resume and LinkedIn. The difference between a mediocre profile and a compelling one usually isn’t the work itself — it’s how the work is described. Impact-based descriptions communicate value, not just activity.
The fundamental shift: stop describing what you did, start describing what changed because you did it.
“Did” descriptions: “Managed Kubernetes cluster,” “Implemented CI/CD pipeline,” “Set up monitoring with Prometheus and Grafana,” “Worked on MLflow model registry integration.”
Impact descriptions: “Managed Kubernetes cluster supporting 200+ microservices, maintaining 99.95% uptime across 18 months of operation,” “Reduced deployment lead time from 3 days to 45 minutes by implementing automated CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions and ArgoCD, eliminating manual deployment steps,” “Reduced mean time to detection (MTTD) for production incidents from 45 minutes to 8 minutes by implementing Prometheus alerting with Grafana dashboards covering 240 system and application metrics,” “Integrated MLflow model registry into deployment pipeline, enabling model versioning and one-click rollback, which reduced average incident resolution time during model degradation events from 6 hours to 20 minutes.”
The formula for impact bullets — every bullet should have three components: the action you took (strong verb, active voice), the specific technology or mechanism, and the measurable outcome. “Action + How + Result.” You don’t need all three in every single bullet — sometimes the impact is qualitative or the mechanism is implicit — but aim for this structure whenever possible.
Finding the numbers — many engineers say “I don’t have metrics, I never tracked them.” You tracked more than you realize. Look back: how many engineers used the platform you built? How many deployments per week? How many services? How many environments? What did the deployment process look like before vs after? How many incidents did you handle? How large was the infrastructure (nodes, clusters, regions)? How many models served? What were the SLA uptime numbers? Even rough numbers are better than no numbers. “~60% reduction in deployment time” is better than “significantly reduced deployment time.”
Qualitative impact when you don’t have numbers — some impact genuinely can’t be quantified, and that’s okay, but be specific even when qualitative. “Improved developer experience” is vague. “Eliminated the need for data scientists to file infrastructure tickets to deploy models, enabling them to self-serve deployments independently” is specific and compelling even without a number attached.
Use the before/after framing — the most compelling impact descriptions implicitly or explicitly show the before state and the after state, making the improvement obvious. “Replaced manual, error-prone deployment process requiring 3-person coordination with fully automated pipeline deployable by a single engineer” creates a vivid picture of both the problem and the solution.
Calibrate impact claims honestly — don’t inflate metrics or claim sole credit for team efforts. Hiring managers verify claims in reference checks and can smell exaggeration in interviews. If you were part of a team, say so: “Led infrastructure design for team of 4 that reduced deployment time from…” Honest, specific, and proportionate is always better than inflated claims that fall apart under scrutiny.
9. Salary Negotiation Preparation
Salary negotiation is one of the highest-ROI skills you can develop. A single negotiation done well can add tens of thousands to your annual compensation and compound over your entire career through future raises and negotiations based on that baseline. Most engineers leave significant money on the table by either not negotiating at all or negotiating poorly.
Let’s cover this thoroughly because most advice on this topic is either too vague or too aggressive.
Know your market value before any conversation — before you talk to any company, you should know what the market pays for your specific skills in your specific geography and at your experience level. Sources: Levels.fyi (excellent for tech compensation including equity breakdowns), Glassdoor, Blind (anonymous salary data), LinkedIn Salary, and simply asking people in your network what they make or what the market is paying. For AI infrastructure and MLOps roles specifically, compensation varies enormously by company type (FAANG vs startup vs enterprise), location, and specialization depth. Build a realistic range based on multiple data points, not a single number.
Never give the first number — the first number anchors the entire negotiation. If you say ₹25 LPA and the company was prepared to offer ₹35 LPA, you’ve just lost ₹10 LPA because you didn’t know your worth and didn’t let them go first. When asked “what are your salary expectations?”, deflect: “I’m more interested in finding the right role and company fit. What’s the budgeted range for this position?” If they insist you give a number, give a researched range with your target at the low end of the range, and say “based on market research for this role level and my experience, I’m targeting X to Y, with flexibility based on the total package.”
Understand the total compensation package — base salary is one component. For tech roles, the full picture includes base salary, annual bonus (and how discretionary vs target it is), equity (stock options or RSUs — understand vesting schedules, cliff periods, and the difference between options and RSUs), health insurance quality and coverage, professional development budget, home office or equipment budget, and flexibility. A higher base with no equity might be better than a lower base with significant equity depending on your risk tolerance and the company’s stage. Evaluate the entire package.
When you receive an offer, do not accept on the spot — always ask for time. “Thank you so much, this is exciting. Can I have a few days to review the details?” Legitimate employers always say yes. Use that time to evaluate the full package against your research, consider competing offers if you have them, and prepare your counter.
Always counter — the initial offer is almost never the final offer. Companies build negotiation room into their initial offers because they expect candidates to negotiate. Not negotiating signals either that you don’t know your worth or that you’re desperate. A professional, respectful counter is expected and welcomed. Simply saying “I was hoping for X based on my research into market rates for this role, and I believe my experience with MLOps and Kubernetes platform engineering at scale supports that. Is there flexibility there?” is completely professional and often effective.
Use competing offers as leverage — if you have another offer, this is your strongest negotiating position. You don’t need to be aggressive or threatening about it. “I’m very interested in this role specifically because of [genuine specific reason], and I want to make this work. I do have another offer at X, and if you’re able to match or come close, this is my first choice.” Most companies will move if they want you.
Negotiate beyond base salary when base hits a ceiling — sometimes a company genuinely can’t go higher on base due to internal pay bands. At that point, negotiate other components: signing bonus (often more flexible than base), equity (additional RSU grants), title (a higher title at this company becomes your baseline for the next job negotiation), additional vacation days, remote work flexibility, professional development budget, or an early review date (“If base is fixed at X, can we agree to a performance review at 6 months instead of 12 with a target increase based on defined metrics?”).
Prepare your narrative for why you deserve the number — don’t just name a number. Know why you deserve it and be ready to articulate it confidently. “Based on my 5 years of experience specifically building ML infrastructure platforms, my hands-on expertise with Kubernetes, ArgoCD, and MLflow at production scale, and market data showing this role level in this market pays X to Y, I’m targeting the higher end of that range.” Confidence in your number comes from having done the research and knowing your value.
The mindset shift that makes negotiation easier — many engineers avoid negotiation because it feels confrontational or greedy. Reframe it: salary negotiation is a professional, expected part of the hiring process. The company is trying to hire you for as little as they can reasonably offer. You are representing your own interests in a business transaction. Both sides negotiating professionally is normal and healthy. The hiring manager is not offended by a counter — they’re negotiating for their company the same way you’re negotiating for yourself. Professionalism, confidence, and specificity are all you need.
